Fun Science Sunday

This week's Science Sunday comes directly from Steve Spangler Science.

The object of this experiment was to get the coin into the jar without touching the coin.

We got a penny into a jar without touching it, using Newton's Law of Inertia.
The first Law of Motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts upon it. When you "flick" the card---on an even path---out from under the coin, there is no force on the penny, only on the index card.

This has great WOW! appeal. Sure to impress all the big brothers and sisters---and even the grandparents.

Another little Leprechaun is going to be well dressed

for Saint Patrick's Day!

(I am using the Simplicity Pattern #3852--it is just wonderful)

We found the pot of gold

under the rainbow.

I saw this in a very old craft book I had laying around the house, so I have no link. It is more of a "do it yourself" from the picture craft.

First I cut a "pot of gold" out of cardstock and Kim and Luke painted it a dark gray.

After it the paint was dry, they added sticker jewels and shiny shamrocks to the pot o' gold.

While the little kids painted, Gracie and Mark colored little Leprechauns to adorn the pots o'gold.

This was the first day on this craft.
Today we made our rainbows.
I simply cut a paperplate in half and made a rainbow.
The kids used markers to color thier rainbows.
I love the image of little hard working hands.
I cut "clouds" out of card stock and Luke and Kim made them perfectly fluffy by gluing cotton balls onto them.

We glued the clouds to the edges of the rainbow.

After all the glue dried, I used yarn to attach the rainbow to the pot o'gold.

A very cute addition to our Saint Patrick's Day decorations!

Science Sunday-oil and water and paint pictures

Oil and water are always fun things to "play" with during science time. Today, I added paint to the mix to make some fun science art projects.

We needed tempra paint, oil, water, a glass cake pan, small bowls and medicine droppers.
Put about a 1/4 cup of oil into a small bowl.
Add quite a bit of tempra paint and mix together. (If you have powered tempra paint this would work even better)

Stir the oil and paint together.

Put water into the cake pan. Using the medicine droppers, drop the paint and oil into the water.

We see that the oil and water and paint don't mix. We made wonderful snakes and great blobs.

After getting the colors "just right" I laid a piece of card stock on top of the water and oil and paint.

The results was a very cool design on our papers. Be prepared to repeat this time and again.

It is fun to see new designs with every paper placed into the pan.

On the science front, we learned that oil and water do not mix.

The Bunny-sitters

Becky got a baby bunny last weekend....she heads out of town this weekend....so.....Grandma gets to bunny-sit for the next four days....

Shamrock Garland

I loved my Valentine garland so much I decided we needed a shamrock garland.
I used this pattern for the shamrocks.
I then made a simple long crocheted chain to string the shamrocks on.

Quick and Easy St. Patrick's Day Wreath

I have been wanting a nice March wreath for my front door, and since we have a house full of Irishmen, I decided on a St. Patrick's Day theme.

I bought a big package of large shamrocks from the craft store. The package in in two colors so I alternated the colors and formed a wreath, hot glueing the shamrocks together into a circle.
Next the kids simply added foam shamrock stickers and shamrock "jewels".
All these stickers were very cheap at the craft store, much cheaper than buying a ready made wreath.
The beautiful final results---in less that a half-hour.
(I guess according to this picture, it could also be a frame for a cuties head!)

I hot glued string onto the back of the wreath to make a hanger for it.

It now adorns our front door---a invitation for any visiting leprechauns.
