The Naked Egg Experiment

 This is an oldie but a goodie.  But, with so many kids, and so many science experiments, I didn't realize that these two hadn't done the "naked egg" experiment. 

All you need is a jar, a raw egg and white vinegar.

Put the egg in the jar and cover with white vinegar.

 Bubbles immediately begin to form on the egg....the white vinegar has begun to dissolve the eggshell.

 After about an hour, the egg began to float.

 The next day, and the next day....change out the vinegar with fresh white vinegar.

After only one day, the shell is mostly dissolved and the egg is squishy.

 After 7 days this is what our egg on the left looks like compared to a x-large egg on the right. (we started with a medium egg)  This is also a lesson about osmosis.

If you look carefully in the sunshine, you can see the yolk sloshing around inside the egg.  The outer membrane is quite rubbery at this point, 

 but not so rubbery that is can't break with you drop it on the counter...poor Luke!

All the egg shell has dissolved as of day 4.

I don't think the membrane could have stretched much farther.

Egg--xperiment is underway--The Naked Egg-Day 2

This is day 2 of the "dissolve the shell off a raw egg with vinegar" experiment, and I have to say, I am very impressed.

Per the instructions, we replaced the vinegar with fresh vinegar today after 24 hours of soaking.

We could see through the jar that "something" was definitely happening.

I believe the shell is completely gone, even though I read that it will take about 5 days.

You can see above the remnants that brushed off with Mark's fingers as he held it.
It feels soft and very smushy, but that membrane appears to be quite strong.
We could actually see the yolk tip from one side of the egg to the other.
Gracie replaced the vinegar and we will let it sit for a few more days to see if there are anymore changes.

Egg--xperiment is underway--The Naked Egg-Day 1

In honor of all the Easter eggs around here, we have begun the exciting experiment of making a "naked egg".

The first step of this experiment is to cover a raw egg with white vinegar. The vinegar will begin to dissolve the egg shell almost immediately.
We were very surprised to see little pits in the shells within an hour.
After 24 hours we will replace the vinegar with fresh vinegar, then we will let the egg sit for 5 days.
At the conclusion of that time, hopefully we will have a "naked egg".
We will surely let you know what happens!!
