Read to Me Challenge--What My Children are Reading

2011Read to Me picture book challenge count is: 35 books!!

We have been learning about hibernation and winter these past few weeks and one of our favorite books about this was Old Bear. While he hibernates, Old Bear, dreams of when he was a cub enjoying the seasons throughout the year. This was a favorite.

We also read a few more books about our solar system. The favorite being The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System.

Luke's favorite book was Katy and the Big Snow. It went with him to "quiet time" and to bed at night with him. This copy is from the library, but I need to get our own copy because it will eventually need to be returned.

Books about the moon were also in this weeks rotation: Papa, Please get the Moon For Me;
Long Night Moon;
Snow Moon

We enjoyed some fun farmyard books and the wooden cutout artwork in the book Ride 'Em Cowboy really caught the kids attention.
The book What Do You do With a Tail Like This? kept us guessing as to what animal was pictured in the beautiful paper collage pictures.

This week we enjoyed a lot of old favorites and a few new books.

The Brown Bear, Brown Bear series of books have provided us will a whole week of kindergarten fun.
Dr Seuss is always a favorite, and often picked off the shelf by the littles for bedtime reading. We are also working hard on the alphabet and beginning to read in kindergarten, so Dr Seuss is a great suppliment to our regular curriculum.

Brave Irene is the story of a very heroic little girl who saves the day and helps her sick mother deliver a ball gown to the mansion in a snowstorm. It was quite long for Luke, 5, and Kim,4, but it kept their attention from start to finish. After reading through it once, it was Kim's book of choice to take to bed with her---and that is a very big honor around here.

I love the Dr Seuss science books. This week we have started learning about the solar system and the book I used to introduce the solar system was There's No Place Like Space.
It is a fun, rhyming read, perfect for kindergarten, and Gracie, 9, loves re-reading it to the kids.

It is packed with info, providing a basic overview of space. (Next week we will enjoy more books about space).

Cowboy and Octopus

was a pretty weird book...the kids didn't seem to understand the relationship between the cowboy and the octopus, the illustrations where comicstrip-ish. It just didn't grab the kids and keep their attention.
The rest of our books this week were all-time favorites from our shelves---much loved and many times read.

What My Children are Reading- Nov 21

It was not all about turkeys and Thanksgiving this week.

We had been missing our copy of Is your Mama a Llama, but it showed up this week and it has been Kimberly's #1 pick of the week.

This beautifully illustrated book has wonderful rhyming riddles which challenge your kids to discover whose mamma is whose.

Kimberly is well on her way to memorizing this whole book.

Our favorite turkey book of the week was Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving.

My 4 youngest kids all loved this book. Be warned, it does have a farmer that tells children on a field trip to his farm that in the morning he is going to kill the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner.

The schoolchildren rescue the turkeys and take them home to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner as guests in their homes.

It is written in the rhyme and cadence of Twas the Night Before Christmas, and very enjoyable, but it may make the kids eat NO turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

What my children are reading-Nov-14

It is that time of year when our reading turns toward Thanksgiving, turkeys and autumn. Our favorite books of the week are below. I also added a carousel widget at the bottom of this post of some of our other books from this week.

I am a Bunny

One of our all-time favorite picture book for my preschoolers--a wonderful picture book, illustrated by Richard Scarry. It is perfect to help preschoolers learn about the seasons.
This First Thanksgiving Day

My kids just loved this book. It is written in rhyming verse and gently tells about life for the Pilgrims and the Native Americans as they celebrate the first Thanksgiving. The illustrations are wonderful and the 3 and 4 year old have enjoyed looking at this on their own over and over.
"12 tables groaning
beneath a harvest spread--
Wampanoag and Pilgrim friends
together will break bread.
Joined under one sky
with one prayer to say--
a prayer of thanks for all they have
this first Thanksgiving Day." This First Thanksgiving Day

One Tough Turkey

The kids loved this story about how the turkeys tricked the pilgrims on the first Thanksgiving---getting away with their lives, so that the Pilgrims had to eat squash instead of turkey.....Luke (4) especially liked this one--he laughed and laughed

What My Children are Reading- Nov 7

We have been read alot since the kids have been sick, and our main theme has been "scarecrows".

All the books shown above are just lovely and are on our favorite list, but the most favored is

Waltz of the Scarecrows.

It is about a little girl staying with her grandparents on their farm during the summer. She is surprised when they start making scarecrows for the corn field out to a ball-gown and hat, coat and tails.

We learn in the story how this tradition began and why it is still being carried out on all the farms in the area.

My 3 and 4 year olds loved this story, but it also held the attention of my 8 and 9 year old---and I have to say, it is also one of my favorites.
