If You Give a Moose a Muffin--fun......

This Christmas, Auntie Kim, (Kimmy's Godmother) got her one of her favorite books If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff, and a stuffed moose to go with it. Auntie Kim got it through the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, but I see that the Laura Numeroff books are gone and they have moved on to Dr. Seuss books. Check them out--it is a great thing.
Since the temperature didn't get about 20 degrees today, I thought it was a perfect afternoon to have some "moose" fun!
So, of course, the first thing we had to do was to make muffins.

"Hey Kim, we are NOT cooking moosemuffins!"

Even sick kids rolled off the couch to help spinkle the crunchy topping on our muffins.

While our muffins we cooking I got out these sequencing cards to go along with the book.

I found a whole free unit at Homeschool Share to use with If You Give a Moose a Muffin.
There are so many activities for this book at Homeschool Share you could spend a whole week having "moose" fun!

The kids did a great job putting the cards in the correct order. Once they were in order, they told the story to me following the cards.

In the story, Moose makes sock puppets. I wasn't quite that energetic this afternoon, so I found these cute moose paperbag puppet at First-School.

All we needed to do was to print, cut out, and glue.

"Moose, meet Moose!"

And of course, if we make puppets, we need to enjoy a puppet show from behind the couch.

What my children are reading-Nov-14

It is that time of year when our reading turns toward Thanksgiving, turkeys and autumn. Our favorite books of the week are below. I also added a carousel widget at the bottom of this post of some of our other books from this week.

I am a Bunny

One of our all-time favorite picture book for my preschoolers--a wonderful picture book, illustrated by Richard Scarry. It is perfect to help preschoolers learn about the seasons.
This First Thanksgiving Day

My kids just loved this book. It is written in rhyming verse and gently tells about life for the Pilgrims and the Native Americans as they celebrate the first Thanksgiving. The illustrations are wonderful and the 3 and 4 year old have enjoyed looking at this on their own over and over.
"12 tables groaning
beneath a harvest spread--
Wampanoag and Pilgrim friends
together will break bread.
Joined under one sky
with one prayer to say--
a prayer of thanks for all they have
this first Thanksgiving Day." This First Thanksgiving Day

One Tough Turkey

The kids loved this story about how the turkeys tricked the pilgrims on the first Thanksgiving---getting away with their lives, so that the Pilgrims had to eat squash instead of turkey.....Luke (4) especially liked this one--he laughed and laughed

Sunflower House-by Eve Bunting

One of our most favorite spingtime books is Sunflower House by Eve Bunting.
We didn't make a sunflower house last year, but I was determined to get one planted this year, and this evening, with Daddy's help we got the job done.

We have a nice rectangular planting area this year, thanks Dad!

Kimmy needed to plant three seeds because she is three. She decided that she wanted to plant more after she realized what fun it was to "garden".

We found this wonderful beetle as we got the ground ready for planting. It is a beetle that I am having a hard time identifying (Uncle Steve-can you help us?). It has neat pincers or something like that on it's head. (Usually our beetles are just "plain headed")

"First the farmer sows the seed,

then she stands and takes her ease.

Stamps her foot and claps her hands,

And turns around to view her land"

Mark planting

and digging little holes--YES, he is using a soup spoon to dig with---we are not normally "farmers".

Mark got the ground ready for 2 hills of pie pumpkin seeds. If only we can grow one pumpkin, it will be a great success.

The moon was out while we planted. Maybe that is good luck!!
