Fun in the Sun---Central New York on Saint Patrick's Day
61 degrees and sunny---we headed to the beach!!Three feet of snow on the beach itself, and not a speck of open water to be seen.
"Run children, run!!! The sun is shining....the snow is melting!!""
A good three feet of snow remains on the beach.
A sunbathing beauty!!
Hopefully, this will be the last snowman of the winter.

I got out the magical beads that find a rainbow today.
They are white when you put them on, but when you head into the sun they find a rainbow.
Hopefully, this will be the last snowman of the winter.

The geese have returned. These lucky snowgeese and Canadian geese found some open water where Oneida Creek runs into Oneida Lake.

Yellow + Blue = Green Shamrocks
We had fun mixing colors today---making beautiful green shamrocks.I used our Color Splash liquid watercolors...my favorite watercolors....and coffee filters cut into the shape of shamrocks.
Kim and Luke used medicine droppers to drop yellow and blue watercolors onto the coffee filters. It was fun to watch the changing colors.
It takes a lot of concentration to drop only one drop at a time onto the coffee filter.
There is nothing more wonderful than an ever moving five year old who has stopped long enough to get a nice photo of his sweet face. 
The finished product....all ready for Saint Patrick's Day.

Much of this week's reading revolves around schoolwork, specifically WWII. I have found many great picture books to supplement our history studies. One of my all time favorite read alouds for this awful time in history is Number The Stars.

One of my all time favorite read alouds for this awful time in history is Number The Stars. Set in Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943, this 1990 Newbery winner tells of a 10-year-old girl who undertakes a dangerous mission to save her best friend.
On my Ipad I am still listening to One Thousand Gifts... and savoring every minute of it.....
On my knitting needles is a soft little baby blanket.....I am so blessed to always have a new baby to be knitting for.....I am making it in a simple basketweave pattern, and because we don't know if this newest little blessing is a great-niece or great-nephew, I am making it in white, mint and yellow.

The First Bloom of Spring--Macro Monday

This week's Science Sunday comes directly from Steve Spangler Science.
Items needed: jar or glass
coins
index card
interested small children
The object of this experiment was to get the coin into the jar without touching the coin.
We got a penny into a jar without touching it, using Newton's Law of Inertia.
The first Law of Motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts upon it. When you "flick" the card---on an even path---out from under the coin, there is no force on the penny, only on the index card.
This has great WOW! appeal. Sure to impress all the big brothers and sisters---and even the grandparents.

We found the pot of gold
under the rainbow.
I saw this in a very old craft book I had laying around the house, so I have no link. It is more of a "do it yourself" from the picture craft.
First I cut a "pot of gold" out of cardstock and Kim and Luke painted it a dark gray.
After it the paint was dry, they added sticker jewels and shiny shamrocks to the pot o' gold.
While the little kids painted, Gracie and Mark colored little Leprechauns to adorn the pots o'gold.This was the first day on this craft.
Today we made our rainbows.
I simply cut a paperplate in half and made a rainbow.
The kids used markers to color thier rainbows.
I love the image of little hard working hands.
I cut "clouds" out of card stock and Luke and Kim made them perfectly fluffy by gluing cotton balls onto them.
We glued the clouds to the edges of the rainbow.
After all the glue dried, I used yarn to attach the rainbow to the pot o'gold.
