This Open Ended Art was mosaic with paper. I went to my new favorite book: The Usborne Complete Book of Art Ideas and found this idea of paper mosaic pencil cans.
We used constuction paper, white printer paper, glue, clear contact paper, and cleaned plastic juice containers.
Cut the white printer paper the exact size of the outside of the juice container.
Make a pretty mosaic on this white paper using colored construction paper.

The big girls and I pre-cut some shapes for Kim and Luke, but we quickly discovered that they wanted to do their "own thing" so they cut, ripped and glued to their hearts content
One little dot of glue is a hard skill to learn. This was a very good project to practice this skill on though, because excess glue just helped the small pieces of construction paper stay in place better.
Kim switched back and forth with a glue stick, but she definitely enjoyed using Elmer's glue more.
Mark worked on a fancier mosaic.
This was quite time consumming for kids that don't remain still for very long, but they did great.
Kimberly was satisfied with her white sheet of paper for her pencil can--she then continued on for another hour of truly "open-ended" art when she cut and glued again and again and again,
Laura was my right hand girl, she never got to make her own project, she was very important in helping the younger kids have fun.
We let these dry overnight. (They were VERY gluey)
The next day, the mosaics were dry, and warped, and I wondered how this would turn out.
I cut clear contact paper the same width as our mosaics. I made it 1 1/2 inches longer at each end for securing to the cans.
Sitck the mosaic to the middle of the contact paper, design side down. Try to get out all the air bubbles at this point.
That's a happy boy!!
Kimmy wouldn't have a picture of her can taken until it had pencils in it---of course!!
An out of order picture.....
Five finished projects from left to right=youngest to oldest.
They turned out very nice---use Christmas colors and I see some Grandparents' gifts.
