We spent a fun day yesterday learning about the Revolutionary War and the impact Fort Stanwix had on the war. Fort Stanwix National Park is a replica of the actual fort on the original site. Above, Mark is trying to build the fort with blocks. In the last few years, they have included a visitors center at this national park. It tells about the role the fort played during the French and Indian War and during the Revolutionary War. It also tells alot about what life was like in colonial times.
Mark got to check out all different types of furs that would have been trapped in this area during Colonial times. Here, he is checking out a fox fur.
If you made it through the entry into the fort you would have been greeted by this cannon. ( but probably not such cute girls)
It was amazing how small and cramped the men's quarters were. They didn't even have straw mattresses, they just slept in the straw.
We thought this was an outhouse, smack dab in the middle of the fort, but we learned that it was for sentry duty during the rain. There are small peek holes on all four sides of the "box".
We next went to the Oriskany battlefield. This battle is considered one of the turning points of the Revolutionary War. It also was one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

I feel a rabbit trail and lapbook might be in store for us on this subject soon.
I love the pictures! My husband grew up in that area and one summer that I stayed with him during college we made a grand tour of all the sites - Stanwix, Oriskany, the Canal Village, etc. We live within day trip range and now I'm tempted to add Stanwix to our spring & summer outings! Thanks for sharing!
