Makes My Monday--The First Day of Spring

Being able to spend the first day of spring at the local state park in central New York really, really Made My Monday!!
The weather has been unbelievable, so we were able to head to Verona Beach on Oneida Lake---13 minutes from our driveway.
At this east end of the lake, the sand has taken over alot of the lake, causing big sandy shoals that the kids enjoyed exploring.
The line of white that you can see on the lake behind the kids is the ice line---it is still a pretty frozen lake.

Just the 4 little kids joined hubby and I on this sunny day at the beach.

Of course, it was the beach, so I guess Luke figured he should get some part of himself wet, even if it was just his feet.

Boys and their dogs find the snow to play in.

We walked to every playground in the state park.

I did warn them

We Made It: Easter Lollipop Flowers

Today we made a nice display of Easter lollipop flowers as seen here.
The first thing we did for these was to color some rice green. This is to put into the pot where we will display our "flowers".
To color your white rice, simply add liquid food coloring to the rice in a ziploc bag.
Shake--shake--shake.....add more food coloring as needed and shake some more.
After achieving the wanted color---I place the rice onto a baking sheet and put in the oven at 250 degrees for about 15 minutes. This sets the color and helps dry out the rice.

While the rice is drying, insert lollipop sticks into the candy. The easiest candy to use are Reese's Peanut Butter candies. It is easier to put the lollipop sticks into the candy if you use a toothpick to get the hole started in the candy.

I used plastic Easter cups for our "vases". Fill each cup halfway with something heavy--we used these glass discs. Making the cups heavy keeps them from easily tipping over.

Now fill each cup almost to the top with the green rice.

Add the lollopop flowers--and the there you go---Easter Lollipop Flowers!

What we saw.....

Everything is sooooo brown--hopefully color will begin to show itself soon, although it is supposed to snow on Monday.

The geese are back and making their nests.

Red-winged blackbirds are everywhere for about the past week and a half.

The turkeys are strutting about.

This is our favorite spot to see great-blue herons, green herons and an assortment of ducks. Today it was all about Canadian geese.

And the drives big excitement was Mark catching these white-tail deer in a picture.

After we got home we just hung around outside.

The temperature reached the mid-60's today, sunny and just beautiful.

We planted a few marigold seeds to grow indoors. You don't plant anything outside around here until about mid May.

We took a walk in the fields out back and Gracie spotted a bird nest from last year.

We were searching for pussywillows, but it is still too early to find any---we only found things the color brown.

We did spot a few monkies up a tree when we got home.

Usually we have young monkies hanging around, but today we even spotted some OLD monkies!!
